A Kink Soliton Characterizing Traffic Congestion
نویسندگان
چکیده
We study traffic congestion by analyzing a one dimensional traffic flow model. Developing an asymptotic method to investigate the long time behavior near a critical point, we derive the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation as the lowest order model. There are an infinite number of kink solitons to the mKdV equation, while it has been found by numerical simulations that the kink pattern arising in traffic congestion is uniquely determined irrespective of initial conditions. In order to resolve this selection problem, we consider higher order corrections to the mKdV equation and find that there is a kink soliton which can deform continuously with the perturbation represented by the addition of these corrections. With numerical confirmation, we show that this continuously deformable kink soliton characterizes traffic congestion. We also discuss the relationship between traffic congestion and slugging phenomenon in granular flow. 46.10.+z 47.54.+r 47.20.Ky Typeset using REVTEX 1

Soliton-like Solutions of the Complex Non-linear Klein-Gordon Systems in 1 + 1 Dimensions
In this paper, we present soliton-like solutions of the non-linear complex Klein-Gordon systems in 1+1 dimensions. We will use polar representation to introduce three different soliton-like solutions including, complex kinks (anti-kinks), radiative profiles, and localized wave-packets. Complex kinks (anti-kinks) are topological objects with zero electrical charges. Radiative profiles are object...
متن کاملSoliton and kink jams in traffic flow with open boundaries.
Soliton density wave is investigated numerically and analytically in the optimal velocity model (a car-following model) of a one-dimensional traffic flow with open boundaries. Soliton density wave is distinguished from the kink density wave. It is shown that the soliton density wave appears only at the threshold of occurrence of traffic jams. The Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation is derived from...
متن کاملFermion Vacuum Effects on Soliton Stability ∗
Just as fermion zero modes can alter the degeneracy and quantum numbers of a soliton, fermion energies can affect the form and stability of a nontopological soliton. We discuss the kink in a two-dimensional linear sigma model, and show that, when coupled to fermions, the kink is no longer an extremum of the energy functional. The kink in this model possesses many similarities to the electroweak...
متن کاملDx and the Kink Soliton
We provide analytical functions approximating e −x 2 dx, the basis of which is the kink soliton and which are both accurate (error < 0.2%) and simple. We demonstrate our results with some applications, particularly to the generation of Gaussian random fields.
متن کاملLattice study of the Kink soliton and the zero - mode problem for φ 4 in two dimensions
We study the λφ 4 1+1 kink solion and the zero-mode contribution to the Kink soliton mass in regions beyond the semiclassical regime. The calculations are done in the non-trivial scaling region and where appropriate the results are compared with the continuum, semiclassical values. We show, as a function of parameter space, where the zero-mode contributions become significant.
